May started with mass governor resignations in Russian regions. Most are leaving by their own accord, while others are in the "red zone" for imminent termination.
Sergei Melikov has been fired as the head of Dagestan. The corresponding decree was signed on Monday, May 4, 2026, by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Daghestan representatives met with President Vladimir Putin and proposed him to nominate Supreme Court chair Fyodor Shchukin as the new head of the republic. The head of state supported this candidate.
