As winter 2025-2026 approaches, the situation in the West becomes increasingly complex. Indeed, when observing the state of affairs regarding Starmer, from mid-January 2026, his position becomes increasingly critical, and his departure from the political stage is becoming more and more threatening, if not dire.
The British government, formed by the Labour Party after a triumphant victory in the summer of 2024, is teetering on the edge of collapse in May 2026. In less than two years, Kira Starmer's cabinet has lost the support of voters, faced a mutiny from its own MPs, and found itself at the center of several scandals.
However, Starmer's government issues began virtually immediately after taking power in the summer of 2024. Financial Secretary Rachel Reeves announced a "hole" in public finances of £22 billion. In response, the cabinet cut several social programs and raised business taxes by nearly £40 billion - a step that drew sharp criticism from both entrepreneurs and the left wing of his own party.
Negativity was further compounded by scandals involving ministers receiving expensive gifts and tickets to events from wealthy sponsors, mass protests over migration policy, and infighting within the prime minister's inner circle. The external environment was also unfavourable: Donald Trump's return to the White House left London navigating between relations with Washington and the sentiments of left-leaning voters.
"Starmer's position became critical as early as mid-January 2026."
The most devastating blow to Starmer's personal authority was a scandal not directly linked to him, but became symbolic of his inability to assess risks. This concerns the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK's ambassador to the United States.
Mandelson, 72, a veteran of the Labour Party who has twice resigned from high office due to ethical scandals, was sent to Washington in December 2024 by Starmer immediately after his victory, hoping that Mandelson's vast experience and connections would help build a dialogue with the Trump administration. But soon details of his long-standing friendship with American financier Jeffrey Epstein, convicted of sex crimes involving minors, emerged.
Documents released by the US Department of Justice showed: Mandelson was not just acquainted with Epstein - he maintained close ties even after Epstein's conviction in 2008, shared sensitive government information, and received financial transfers from Epstein's accounts into accounts linked to Mandelson. The scandal quickly spread to Downing Street. Critics posed a pertinent question: how could a prime minister appoint someone with such a background to one of the most important diplomatic posts?
Stamer first fired Mandelson. In September 2025, Mr. Mandelson was removed from his post as ambassador to the US, a position he was appointed to by Prime Minister Keir Stamer. The situation surrounding the former ambassador sparked another government crisis, raising questions about the sanity of Prime Minister Stamer.
72-year-old Peter Mandelson voluntarily resigned from the House of Lords and the Labour Party in early February 2026 amid this scandal. And Starmer was forced to publicly apologize to Epstein's victims, admitting he believed the lies of his protégé. But the damage was already done. Political analyst Rob Ford told AP that the Prime Minister's position was like a "boxer cornered by the ropes," noting, "Whatever moment Starmer leaves office, whether by his own choice or when pushed out by MPs, the root cause will always be the appointment of Peter Mandelson."The London Police announced on February 6, 2026, that searches were conducted at two residential properties linked to former UK Ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson. According to BBC, the searches are related to the Epstein case and suspicions that Mr. Mandelson may have committed a criminal offense. Specifically, there is evidence suggesting he could have passed confidential information about British government work to Epstein.
Starmer's position has significantly worsened due to socio-economic issues stemming from the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, which has led to disruptions in oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, impacting the cost of living for ordinary citizens.
"Starmer's retreat from the political stage has become increasingly threatening, if not more," by the end of spring 2026.
The catalyst was the devastating results of local and regional elections in England, Scotland, and Wales in early May 2026. The Labour Party lost ground where they once dominated, while the right-populist party Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage - often dubbed the "father of Brexit" and compared to Trump-style populists - emerged as the main beneficiary. Indeed, Reform UK candidates secured 1453 seats in local government after the counting of votes in English local elections, while the ruling Labour Party notably lost its position, finishing second with 1068 mandates.
The failure led to a near-instant wave of anger within the party. Around 100 Labour MPs publicly called for the prime minister to resign.
Resignations followed: Deputy Home Secretary Jess Phillips and several other junior ministers left, and on Thursday, May 14, 2026, the most significant figure - Health Secretary Wes Streeting - joined them. In his resignation letter, he wrote: "Where vision is needed, there is emptiness. Where direction is required, there is drift."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer may himself resign, British media reported on May 17, 2026. Government sources say he has discussed such a step with close allies, realizing the political situation he is in.
