And yes, around October 8–10, 2026, the situation for Russia looks very unpleasant… These dates may bring highly dangerous events associated with the likelihood of significant technical losses, natural problems, especially those related to water.
Russia’s Ministry of Transport officially confirmed that the tanker that caught fire off the coast of Sochi on the evening of October 6 was attacked by Ukrainian unmanned surface vessels (USVs). Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin held a headquarters meeting on mitigating the consequences.
“A vessel carrying oil under the Liberian flag was attacked by unmanned surface vessels. The crew of 23, all Indian citizens, was rescued; according to preliminary information, there were no casualties,” the Ministry of Transport’s official channel reported.
According to specialized portals, the attacked vessel is named AFRAMAX RIO. The tanker was traveling from Novorossiysk, fully loaded with oil: according to source estimates, it had 760,000 barrels of oil on board, about 100,000 tons, with a total value of approximately $70 million.
According to MarineTraffic, before calling at Novorossiysk, AFRAMAX RIO visited the Turkish ports of Tuzla and Samsun, after which it headed for Constanța, Romania. Earlier in 2026, according to media reports, Ukraine added the tanker to its sanctions list as part of Russia’s “shadow fleet.”
Russia’s Ministry of Transport reported that open burning of oil began in the Black Sea waters after the strike on the tanker. Authorities in Sochi advised residents not to open windows and to avoid the beaches.
“The fire most likely began in the cargo tanks in the middle section of the vessel. The fire then spread along the starboard side toward the stern. There were subsequently clear signs of burning oil spreading along the starboard side in the stern section. Later videos and photographs show a large area of burning oil on the water at the vessel’s stern and a high column of smoke,” The Maritime Executive claims.
However, there is a possibility that the consequences were not as serious as expected. In the morning, Dmitry Plishkin, head of the administration of the Sirius federal territory, reported that concentrations of pollutants in the air remained many times below maximum permissible levels and posed no health threat.
Environmental expert Georgy Kavanosyan noted that the tanks of the AFRAMAX RIO tanker contain an order of magnitude more oil than was spilled in the Black Sea during the incident near Anapa in 2024. However, there are currently no signs of a major spill.
“The key question is the condition of the tanks that actually carry the oil. Yesterday it burned quite quickly, burning out literally within half an hour. There is a suspicion that only the diesel fuel used by the tanker was burning. Oil usually burns much longer. It is not certain that the tanks were burning. So far, volunteers have not seen any traces on the shore. If oil starts washing ashore, we will examine it immediately. That would mean the tank has been punctured,” Kavanosyan explained.
The environmental expert warned that the threat remains very high if it turns out that the tanks were punctured.
On the morning of October 7, Rosprirodnadzor reported that no pollution had been detected after the huge fire in the anchorage near Sochi.
The Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Defense, and the authorities of Krasnodar Krai have begun mitigating the consequences of the attack on the Aframax Rio tanker in the Black Sea, Russia’s Ministry of Transport reported.
Oil caught fire after the attack on the Aframax Rio tanker near Sochi. The open fire was extinguished. The Kremlin stated that it had effectively caused no environmental damage.
“This concerns not petroleum products, but crude oil. From the standpoint of potential environmental damage, it is, so to speak, less harmful. And due to the burning—indeed, one tank was damaged—and the oil from that one tank burned out completely, in fact causing no damage to the environment,” Peskov said.
Separately, Rosprirodnadzor reported that during observations after the fire, it found no pollution of the water area or coastline. No exceedances of permissible pollutant concentrations were detected in Sochi or in the Sirius federal territory either.

…The situation for Russia looks very unpleasant and may lead it onto a false course. And only around February 8, 2027, after another phase of these mistaken actions, will Russia begin to emerge from the steep dive of this delusion…
